CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY

Information and Course Schedule

The Citizen’s Police Academy is a program designed to provide Norfolk residents first-hand information about how their police department works and develop partnerships with the citizens to help make the City of Norfolk a strong, safe community. This program has continued to increase in popularity; more than 1000 citizens have received training in the Academy, which requires the commitment of one night a week for a 13-week period.

Classes include but are not limited to topics such as, gangs, dispatch center operations, criminal investigations, narcotics investigations, forensics and crime scene investigations, K9, and the pistol range. Learning is reinforced by practical exercises.

To attend the academy, participants must: be 18 years of age or older, complete an application for enrollment, and pass a limited background investigation.

The Citizens Academy is offered in the Spring and Fall of each year. The Fall sessions are August through November; the spring sessions are March through June. Visit the "About The Citizens Police Academy" page on this site to find out more about the academy.

Classes are held on Thursday nights from 6:30pm to 9:30pm at the Second Patrol Division, located at 2500 North Military Highway near its intersection with I 64. Click on the link on our Home Page to see a map to the Second Patrol.

CITIZENS’ POLICE ACADEMY AND CPAAAN

Upon graduation from the academy, citizens have the opportunity to join CPAAAN, the Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association of Norfolk, whose mission is “to support law enforcement in Norfolk, Virginia through education, information, networking, community service and volunteerism.” CPAAAN members are very active within their communities and assist the police department during the Citizens’ Police Academy sessions as well as with a variety of other events such as; Recruit Academy Graduations; National Night out; Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony and Youth Academies. In addition, CPAAAN co-sponsors the annual Crime Prevention Awards Ceremony and provides academic scholarships to children of NPD sworn officers.
